Mrs. Ayilara of EveryHome
The challenge of maintaining a healthy and smooth skin is a lifetime career and challenge, with the recent revelation by Nigeria Meteorological Service that Nigerians should expect more hot weather and warmer nights. Nigerians may need to spend more on beauty and skin care products with certainty that later there might be increase in reported cases of skin cancer. However, a careful selection of beauty creams will not only save your skin from the predicted heat but also offers a future of assured guaranty of a free diseased skin. Shea butter, a triglyceride fat that is derived mainly from stearic and oleic acid is used as a base for medicinal ointments and has been known to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturizer, salve or lotion. Shea Butter is a certified natural and traditional skin protector, used worldwide not only for body cream production but also in the production of edible products. It is called Ori in yoruba, Kadanya in Hausa and Okwume in Igbo, CM went in search of Mrs. Ayelara, Director of EveryHome Shea Butter to educate us on the use of Shea Butter. Every Home is into packaging of Shea Butter, it core business and liquid soap production. Excerpt.

When and how did you discover the efficacy of Shea Butter?
I have known about Shea Butter since I was a child. We were brought up using Ori, as it is called in my language. My parent used it for us, not only after a good shower but also when you have burns or any skin related injuries. During this period, I have realized a lot of good things about it. Although, we are constantly researching the efficacy of Shea Butter, but with the little we know, Ori-Shea Butter is a multi-cure product for all skin diseases. For one, because of its antioxidants properties, that makes it perfect for any skin issues and can be used for anything if properly mixed with other natural ingredients. This is where we derived our business concept.

What are the uses of Shea Butter?
Ori is a versatile product derived from Acadia tree. Ori has many uses; it is good for preventing diaper rash, and also good as a body product. It makes the body supple and fresh, if you used the unrefined Shea Butter mixed with essential oil. You will find out that after many uses your skin become soft, supple and fresh. Also, Shea Butter can also be used as a hair product. As a hair care product, Shea Butter is good for dandruff; it makes your hair shine and soft. It is also good for arthritis patient especially for old people. Shea Butter can be use alone or it can be mixed with other natural ingredients to ease joint and back pain. Ori can be mixed with various other natural ingredients for various use, however the important thing is getting the right quantity to mix that will give an effective results. If you are mixing for hair usage especially hair with dandruff, I personally mix with essential oil. You can also add coconut oil to the mix. Both these oils have their uses, so when combined with the components in Shea Butter its makes your hair dandruff free and soft. What you can mix Ori with is endless, for the body, we add vitamin E oil. Vitamin E use has been associated with soft skin, free from dryness and restoration of skin. For babies, you can mix Shea Butter with coconut oil for smooth skin or Vaseline. The oily components in both coconut oil and Vaseline prevent skin moisture from baby's wee or popo. This mixture also prevents heat rash.

How do can we differentiate between refined and unrefined Shea Butter?
I must confess that most Shea Butter people sell now a days are refined, except you have direct suppliers or someone that is trustworthy. We have direct suppliers from Niger State, who have Shea Butter nut trees on their farms. So, I am sure of their Shea Butter. To identify refined Shea Butter, look at it carefully you will notice it has a sandy feel. This is as a result of the Shea Butter passing through heat, this is done sometime to increase the quantity. When you heat Shea butter and its cool down, the quantity increase but it will be a little bit harder and the colour changes.

How do you sources for your Shea butter?
I source my product directly from the farmers in Niger State, and Maiduguri Nigeria.  Whenever, I am sourcing from there I always make sure I have someone on ground there, if I can’t be there myself. That is just to ensure there is no hanky panky.

What are the challenges you faced with the business?
The main problem is getting unrefined Shea butter, then again convincing new customers that you sell unadulterated Shea butter thanks to the proliferation of people into the business. The storage too poses a problem; the storage of Shea butter required a cool place away from direct sun light.

How do you come about the name, EveryHome?
Our brand name is EveryHome. On the pack you will see that we have a picture of the whole family, it's because everybody in the family can use Shea butter for everything and every home should have it. Even, my children know that when they have injuries they need to put Shea butter.

Why should people use Shea butter instead of all those beauty creams, we heard of?
The most important reason for people to use Shea butter is the fact that it is natural because most of the creams you refer to have too much chemicals in them and the PH level that is too high for your skin. And because we have a harsh weather condition here you find out your skin is burnt but Shea butter is a natural beauty cream and a major ingredient from nature for cream production.

Why should people buy Every Home Shea butter?
Well, Every Home Shea butter guarantees you a hundred percent unrefined Shea butter of different sizes at a moderate price.

What are the types of products you have?
