I want to be treated like everybody else - Miss Smithyz 2016 winner

The Miss Smithyz 2016 Beauty Pageant funfair drums may have stopped, but the Queen, Vivian Peterson is just setting up shop for what promise to be an exciting Ambassadorship. Commune Magazine, CM cornered the first ever Miss Smithyz Club and lounge Beauty Queen and Ambassador, in this chat with Ola Pat, Assistant Editor, she revealed why she her plan and strategy.


On February 14, Vivian Peterson emerged the winner of Miss Smithyz 2016 Beauty Pageant, as her name was called as the winner it was obvious she was not expecting it. She shed tears of joy while she was dressed up in her new office garb. CM asked her how she felt, “I was surprised, my mind was set on being the first or second runner up. And when my name was not among those called for the position, I just zero my mind and resigned to fate.”

Although, she insisted that with the beauty crown she still feels like her old self with no significant change has taken place in her life. She informed this magazine that she is still thinking on how best to carry out her new role to the benefit of her principal and community. She, however agreed that she had so much on her plate, the most important being her studies. In fact, she shared her priority formula with us. “I can cope with all. If I am given 100 percent, I will give 50 percent to my studies and share the remaining 50 percent with other activities.”

Vivian, a 300 level economics student of University of Lagos, Unilag is the second child in a family of 7 including her parents. She is from Edo state. Her journey into the beauty pageant began when her cousin urged her to participate and had to work hard to persuade her. After expressing her desire to participate in the beauty pageant by picking up a form, she informed her parent, who she said was very supportive of her aspiration.



As she hopes to graduate next year, 2017, CM asked her about her ambition. “There is no job, so I am going to try my luck with entrepreneurship.” Initially, she put in for petroleum engineering, but because she did not do further mathematics in her secondary education. She was shocked to discover that without further mathematics she cannot study any engineering course in Unilag. So, she was advised to teleport to economics department.

With this new found status comes new respect from course mates and colleagues in school. She told CM that she would prefer to be treated like everybody else. In her case, she was shocked, as she sees everything as normal but she was receiving preferential treatment as the news of her enthronement spread. “People now reserve seat for me in class and some look for excuse to talk to me.”


Doing a leisure time, she said she like to relax with a good book or cool music. She was once an aspiring footballer in her 100 level until she twisted an ankle. That single incident made her give up on football. She attended Bayget International School, Oko-Oba in Agege and Lagos State Model College. Her first shot at JAMB landed her in a polytechnic in Ibadan, but she forfeited the admission. She described herself as a very simple person that makes friends easily and don't get angry easily.
