Excerpt:

I understand there is a tremendous opportunity in the app industry. What is the future of the app industry in Nigeria?
The future of App industry in Nigeria is just like the sky, with no limits. The IT revolution is moving gradually away from the web to the mobile and smartphones, and this revolution is driven by Apps, especially the social media Apps.

It is said that every business and organization needs an app, how true is this assertion?
That's just the plain truth. Modern research has projected that any business/organization that fails to adopt mobile App by 2027 will lose relevance by 75%.

As an app development company in Nigeria, what is your experience like?
Going into App happen to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. It has been great, educative, informing, entertaining, and above all, rewarding.

What are the types of apps business and organization can have?
They can have any type of apps. When it comes to building Apps, the first thing to consider should be: Who owns the App? Who is the App made for? What information, product, or services is the App going to provide.  This will give a picture of the type of App to be built, but we build to address virtually anything that has come our way.

Is there any limit to the type of apps business can develop?
There are no limits at all. In as much as the business is in existence, new ideas and innovations will always come up, this gives way to the business or individual to either upgrade an existing App, or develop a new one to serve a purpose.

It is generally believed that app development is quite expensive, is that true?
I think it all depends on how complex the app is, and also depends on the bargaining power of the party involved. But, I know it is quite cheaper to make an App in Nigeria, than what is obtainable in other developed countries. And since more and more Nigerians are building Apps as the days goes by, it, therefore, means the price is within reach.

How expensive is App Wheel app development?
We are not expensive, besides Apps Wheel was created to support inspiring developers to get involved, as well as give that window for small and medium business, organization and individuals to upgrade and be part of the mobile revolution. Apps Wheel app development is very much affordable. We are Nigerians, and we are proud of that.

What are your services like?
We run in two sections, App Academy is focused on training and mentoring, while the Apps Wheel proper handles Development, Administration and Clients services.

What type of apps do you develop?
Apps Wheel comfortably develops Apps for various markets,  ranging from Schools, Church, audio/video streaming, game, e-commerce, chat/social media, and the list is endless.

What is the process of developing an app?
As soon as we receive client's briefing, we start from planning to data collation, and then we move into execution, then testing and amendment (if any) before delivery.

What type of support do you offer the business that you develop an app for, after deployment service?
We offer after sales services, like managing the App for those that may need such support. We also train our customers on how to manage their App. We are always available for every upgrade request with 24/7 phone support.

When can a business develop an app?
At any time the business seeks to break new grounds, and also when the business is on the quest for customer base expansion.

In What areas can an app help businesses?
The importance of mobile App to a business is endless. These few can quickly be mentioned; Easy and quick service delivery, Publicity and customer base expansion, Fast and easy passage of information on new products or services to customers with just a single click, without having to pay for advertisement, Easy access into the global business circles and a lots more.

What is your company flagship product all about?
The product is a flash drive customised to look like an ATM card. It has to do with a client gifting idea and an opportunity to advertise their business on everyday used items such as Power bank, Flash drive, Glowing Wristband etc. Clients love it when you appreciate their patronage with a gift hence customised ATM flash card drive will put a smile on every client's face. It is the size of an ATM card, which makes it fits into wallets and a small purse.

Why should a company or people customize their gifts?
The concept of corporate gifting is meant to serve two purposes: customers appreciation and advertisement or awareness creation for brands. So, companies need to customize their gifts by inscribing on it their name, logo and contacts in order for the gift to serve that main purpose which is to advertise their business. It is a win-win for the customer and the business.

Who are those that can give this type of gift, the customised flash drive, glow wristband and power banks?

Adila couture introduces easy to wear hijabs

Adila couture introduces easy to wear hijabs

By: Habibat Yussuf

As more Muslim sisters get attracted to wearing hijabs in fulfillment of Allah's command to keep their chastity, some of the hindrances have often been: the time needed to get a perfect nice wrap around, the knowledge curve needed to wrap it around appropriately, pinning it fashionable and most importantly pinning it without a scratching the face and without discomfort.

The traditional way of wearing the hijabs not only affect the lifespan of the hijabs, the pin holding it together often mark the face and cause discomfort. But all that may be in the past as Adila Couture, an innovative fashion House have created ready-to-wear Hijabs for the 21st-century Muslim sisters and mothers that requires no pin, wrap around knowledge curve and more importantly no facial discomfort and scratches. In our 2017, 3rd quarter series: Business Services, Adila Couture`s dynamic Creative Director, Mrs. Ayilara gives a background to their innovativeness in headgears.  Enjoy reading.

What is the latest in headgear?
As you know the headgear is just an aspect of our fashion business. Our service catered for both male and female corporate and casual wears need. We are even more particular about Muslim females wear, because of the Special requirements of their dressing.  Our latest innovation project is the Fashionable hijabs. It is a ready-to-wear Hijab without the hassle of putting pins here and there and perhaps damaging the hijab by putting holes in it, it's just a "slip on" that is simple and fashionable at the same time. We solve the problem of wearing and at the same time address the fashion side of it.

Who is it for?
It is for every Muslim woman, who wants to obey Allah and the prophet. Our product makes it easy for them to obey. It can be used alone or as "adds on. It can be worn on a bigger hijab. It is made so simple that it can be worn by anyone to the office or any outing, easy to wear and easier to pull off.

What is different between this and the traditional one?
The difference is much, the traditional hijab required time to put on even when you are adept at wearing it while this one is something you slip into nicely. It means while you are in a hurry, you can slip into it still searching your bag for your car keys. This design increase the lifespan of the hijabs, if you are like most hijab sisters you start losing interest in your favourite hijabs because the pins you use have created too many pinholes. This design eliminates the use of pins and the discomfort that comes with it. Those ones are the usual rectangular hijab that needs a pin to hold it in place that is mainly just the difference between the 2 hijabs, one is hassle-free, pin free, just slip on while the other is the opposite.

How do you come about this innovation?
Well, I just love hijabs with more volumes in the front, it covers the back and the fronts with its fullness, this can hardly be achieved with the usual slip-on hijabs available in the market, so I came up with this one after I had put pins in everywhere possible just to get the desired volume. And as a designer, I decided to design one the way I want it to look on me. As usual, sisters start ordering for their "copies”, because they know we innovate.
Again the desire to make hijabs easy to wear for new hijabis or hijabites as you wish, practical working women, university students, moms, doctors, and nurses without going through the struggle of styling their hijab and using pins prompted this innovation.

And how is the response from your clients?
So far, the response is really encouraging. Remember, it was the demand that led to the commercialization of my personal hijab design. It seems that there are people just like me that are tired of using pins every time and spending their precious time to achieve a fashionable style. They just want to wear their desired kind of hijab design. There is more demand for more designs which we are working on right now. Presently, we have two designs. These designs are so versatile that it blends well with any outfit, it comes in various colors made with velvet and sometimes combined with nets, we have it in one hand, 2 hands, with or without a cap. We can also design to specifications. So, you no longer have bad hijab days! …No more pins on the bed, on the chair or anywhere!

Lastly, let's talk about your headgears, the Turbans?
We call them head wraps, also popularly known as turbans. They are a form of caps that used to be mainly for our mothers then especially Muslim women until fashion focuses attention on them. Now new fashionable turban has emerged, with embellishment made of stones and pearls, it's no longer a home headgear. It has since become a part of modern women fashion and an outing accessory that can be worn to any event and on anything, native, casual even on corporate wears.
How can one order for any of these headgears?
We are a modern fashion house, so people can order by phone, Whatsapp and on our social media handles and we deliver everywhere within Nigeria. Our terms and condition, a token for delivery. Our Free Delivery independent promo is still on until the end of October 2017 for those living on Lagos Island.

Focusing on money will drain your brand – The Strategist

Focusing on money will drain your brand – The Strategist

The Strategist
For those who follow personal development coaches and speakers on social media especially  the whole gamut of or any of the those that Avance Media classified as the most influential young Nigeria in Personal development and academia in 2016, then the name, Victor Onyekere Dinachi aka The Strategist would not be unknown. Victor also known as the strategist “helps individuals to become productive, growing their excellence and increasing their value.”

He is the founder of Love Care Community and a content creator at 9jasound.com. He studied Public Health Education at the Lagos State University, Ojo, Nigeria. Commune Magazine asked the ever busy life productivity speaker and Strategist to put in perspective everything about value as part of our 2017 Developmental series.

What is a value?
Value is the worth of anything. It is the significance that a particular person or a thing carries. It can be tangible or intangible.

What is so special about value?
Importance or significance is what makes value what it is. When something or someone is no longer considered as important or significant, it invariably means that the value has dropped.

What happens if there is no Value?
The strength and the attention that anybody or anything will generate is a measure of its significance, relevance and usefulness. When there is no value, there will be no attraction and attention. Even money follows and responds to the direction of value. If there is no value, what we have is nuisance

How can a person add value to him/herself?
First, by crafting out his/her personal mission statement so as to know where he/she is heading in life. Then he/she will know what type of value to pursue. Not every VALUE is Valuable to an individual; I will be sharing this in my ONLINE PRODUCTIVITY WEBINAR this February. Once an individual has decided where they are headed, the next thing is to begin to look out for things within that specified area that will make them better in their chosen path.

Is a business values different from personal values?
To an extent, yes. As a business, you must decide what will guide your core operational activities. However, most times your personal core values are reflected in your business especially if you own the business. What you are as a person will flow into your business. A dishonest individual may be considered a clown when he says, “INTEGRITY is one of my business values.” This is largely because you are the business. How you live your life will reflect in your business. However, you must learn to separate your business from you if you want it to go global, which is why I began by responding “To an extent’’

How can we measure or recognize value?
Value is measured and recognized by relevance, worth and significance. Also, impact is another metrics of measuring value. We can look at Facebook today and say that it is of High Value because of the impact it has generated over the years.

What is the difference between value and packaging?
Value is not packaging and Packaging is not value either. The value of anything is known by the impact it is able to generate. If you package something of no value, it will not be too long before people will begin to disassociate from that thing because its true worth will be finally unveiled behind the packaging. It is better to generate value first and then properly package it. I totally support packaging as I am into Brand Consulting, but I am totally against packaging Nuisance (something of less value or no value at all).  Packaging may attract Customers and Clients, but what retains them is Value.

How do we start to build or develop value?
I think I have answered this in my previous answer or so. Anyways, first thing is to Define what you want, stay focused on it, be consistent. It is better to be consistently doing small things than doing big things inconsistently. Value is not built over night at least I did not build mine overnight. Anything built overnight will vanish overnight. REAL Value takes REAL Work.

What will be your advice for small business owners concerning value?
If you are a small business owner, take your focus off money. It will drain your Brand. Focus on creating value. As long as you keep up with value, money will respond to it. Value is a Money attraction TOOL. Money will always respond and to the direction of value.

What do you do?
That is like a CAMBRIDGE question. I help passionate individuals gain clarity, adjust behavior, achieve productivity and delivering excellent result to increase their value in their chosen path. I do this via my mentoring, coaching and speaking platforms both online and offline. You can refer to me as The Clarity Assistant and Productivity Partner. Though, I am fondly called THE STRATEGIST.

What is Love Care Community?
Love Care Community is a Social Enterprise which I started in April 2014 in my 300 Level in the University. We are focused on creating an environment and a platform where young individuals can leverage on in order to achieve success and excellence. We do this through Mind Reformation and Mind Strengthening programmes. We are keenly interested and directly involved in Human Capacity Development.

What is your past experience like?
Starting a non-profit organization is a REAL WORK. It is not like your regular 9 to 5 work, it is practically an all-round-the-clock work. The likes of Raquel JACOBS, Lola ODENIYI, and Prince Olarewaju can all testify to this. As the visionary, you have got to be the Director, the Programme Coordinator, the Social Media Manager, the Advocacy Manager; I mean you have to do practically everything till your work is able to generate attention. It is being really tough I must say, starting and still growing after 2 years. We have gained presence in 4 schools with our Student Leadership Summit Training Programme specially designed for the School Prefects. I remembered when we sent a letter to the Lagos State Ministry of Education; it took quite some time to get a response only for us to be turned down. That did not stop our work. It is been an experience of continuous learning and having interaction with different kinds of people. Presently we have about 7 Programme Facilitators and 7 Volunteers working with us.

What are the services you offer?
We run two programmes at the moment; The Student Leadership Summit Training Programme (SLSTP) and The Entrepreneurship and Skill Acquisition Programme (TESP). We will be launching two new programmes this year; High school 2 College Programme (HCP) and College 2 Workplace Programme (CWP). Our Target audience is young individuals between the ages of 15-30 years.

Who are your clients?
On a personal level, a percentage of my clients are passionate individuals who are ready to achieve productivity and move to the next level but are not sure how they will do that. Another percentage are those in need of Telemarketing services, Brand consulting and  Staff training.

How do you help your clients?
I help them through coaching, mentoring and training. I also host training sessions and classes.

What is your advice for people on value?
I am not going go around the bush on this one. I will just hit it hard. For you to be a person of value, you have to build a strong value system. You can’t deploy value you have not generated. Increase your capacity to generate maximum value.

What projects are you working on presently?
Speaking about my on-going project, I launched a platform last year which is centered on Nation Building, The Young Leaders Connect Conference. This is rationale behind the opening of that platform; I am an active NATION BUILDER. I am very much interested in Leadership.

According to the National Baseline Youth Survey (2012), the population of youths (15-35 years) in Nigeria was estimated to be 64 million where female were 51.6 percent and male were 48.4 percent. This invariably means that Nigeria has a great potential of becoming an undoubtedly great nation. However, great nations are built by great leaders and Leadership is simply a mentality of an assumed responsibility.

Unfortunately, the future of Nigeria is not yet ready to take Nigeria to the next level. Whenever God wants to transform a nation, he uses leaders. We may not get to the next level as a nation when we have not created and built leaders that will undertake that transitioning process. We also don’t just need leaders but we need leaders of excellence across every sector. Transformation of any kind starts with Mind Reformation and Renewal as clearly seen in Rom. 12:2. This largely means that only a renewed mind can bring about transformation at any level. At the Young Leaders Connect Conference, we shall speak words that will renew minds and reposition lives.

The Young Leaders Connect Conference is an annual Nation building event which is set to premier this year in Delta State. YLCC seeks to gather young and highly motivated individuals annually to critically talk about matters of leadership going back to its basics and root as it relates to national development and transformation. It also serves as a platform to connect leaders across diverse industries with other leaders for collaboration and co-creation and to link up emerging leaders with established leaders for mentoring, coaching and training.

The Young Leaders Connect Conference is out to build strategic, principled and excellent leaders across diverse industries. This year’s event will focus on the theme: ‘’REPOSITIONED TO LEAD’’ which will be happening in March.

Book Review: You need much more than customers to succeed - Richard Chilee

Book Review: You need much more than customers to succeed - Richard Chilee

By: Ola Pat
No automatic alt text available.

Author: Richard Chilee
Book Title: Advance
Pagination: 81
Number of Chapters: 14
Book Type: eBook

The short supply of electricity had been forcing me to go to the office on weekends. My office is in a service complex, where no matter the level of power generation in Nigeria, I will get electrical power – Monday through Saturday for the productive hours of 9 am to 6 pm. But on Saturday, January 28, 2017, my office could not provide the electrical service beyond 3 hours due to maintenance servicing of the generating set. Since I have sent my family off on a friendly family visit; I could not go home for fear of being bored to death during the “home alone” waiting for my family.

Out of frustration, I quickly left the office without adequate home preparation. One of the things I left in my hurry is the book I was currently reading, The 17 Indisputable laws of teamwork by John Maxwell. So, when I got home I got myself one of the smoothies my wife made in the morning and decided to glance through one of the eBooks on my phone. I picked Advance, a book reserved for my February reading. The cover of the book is so attractive that you can’t miss it among hundreds of book covers.

I tried as much as I could not to mention the design technicality of the book but I am too “wowed” even as an experienced Graphic Artist to overlook it. Apart from the simplicity of the attractive cover, every law guiding the design of books was conspicuously implemented and taken care of especially when it comes to the white spacing and the use of the most appropriate font. The font used in the main body of the book is very eyes friendly ensuring that reader’s eyes are glued to the page longer without pain. Also, after every chapter is a picture break before proceeding to the next chapter.
The advance: revealing meaningful customer relationship strategies is an eBook written by Richard Chilee, a Port Harcourt, Nigeria-based content developer and business development strategies. He is the head of Richard and Macoltonconsultin firm, a business management and leadership development company.

The eBook contains 14 chapters each dealing with a specific issue of customers relation and strategies. According to the author, in his Raison d’etre (Reason for the book) the purpose of writing the book Is to bring the reader closer to his/her customers and empower him/her to convert customers to believers. Richard is of the opinion that business people need much more than customers to succeed. “You need believers, a tribe, a dedicated audience” that will be your word of mouth.

The opening Chapter set the ball rolling with the problem of not having confidence in one's products or service, the basic foundation of any business. It is pointed out the possible issues that will arise from that lack of confidence. The way out, the author posited is to understand your product or understand what you do.

The second chapter deals with understanding your customers. The author put it this way “ you have to find a way to listen to your customer first and understand their viewpoint. Customers buy because they feel understood and special”. The chapter highlighted ways by which business people can move their “customer relations from the transaction to the collaborative level” by domesticated examples.
Chapter Three focuses on how to befriend your customer by being there through friend that care about other aspects of their life. The author insisted that you must befriend all the categories of customer you have because any of the group can cause severe damage to your business image with word of mouth.

How to avoid arguing with customers was the focus of chapter Four and chapter Five warns against criticizing customers’ decision especially for those who offer service. The chapter suggests taming irritating customers with patience and tolerance.

The next chapter re-emphasis the age long business maxim that customers are king. As such they must be treated with respect and courtesy. While chapter Seven deals with the issue of explaining thoroughly and comprehensively about product or services by engaging and educating them. By engaging them business people can break customers’ defence mechanisms while educating them creates a need in their mind.

Gathering information from customers is the mission of chapter Eight. The author believes that listening to and learning from “Customers is a grand business strategy...”  while chapter Nine encourages business people to always admit it, especially to their customers when they are wrong.
In the author’s submission, it is no longer grand to stay off the internet and Chapter 10 gives reasons why every business must not only be online but also have a POS. Chapter 11 went on to advocate on given customers selfless and non-monetary services. He expatiates further that gift for the customers need not cost the business an arm and a leg because often what count is the intention.

Chapter 12 Implores business people to make their customers a priority especially in business decision while Chapter 13 shift our attention to keeping the promises our brand made to the customers. The author guarantee that doing so will open more business doors. And also your business growth and prosperity depend on keeping that brand promise no matter the condition.

The last, Chapter 14 encourages business owners to stress the functionality of their product /service rather than the form. He three core areas of every business to be form, functionality and fabulous. The form being the outlook and design of business while functionality, the most important of the three is the derivable from using service or buying your product. To know or capture what your business does, he posed these two questions: What do you do? What problem does your business solve?

In all this free eBook will be a standard of measure even for a paid eBook and printed books too. The author has successfully domesticated all the principles with examples from here - Nigeria, you can download the eBook :

Social Media Automation: your social media management on auto-pilot

MBA Class Flyer
Remaining in the timeline of any major social media is a war that every marketer and family member strive to win. It is a war involving anybody that has something to sell, a relationship to develop or an idea to propagate. Because of the constant flow of information on the social media, your well-orchestrated message is quickly swept away into the day’s database to make way for another one that will also end up just like yours.

Commune Magazine also faced the same problem of staying visible even on our own timeline. So, we have to keep reposting every now and then so that our blog can be seen. It is very exhausting and tiresome. Then in December, our Social Media Crew led by Gbenga Agboola attended an online course from the Social Media Examiners. And the change was phenomenal. Since January 2017, we have been able to stay visible on the Social Media and that has resulted in increased visits to our blog. Our team also spends less time and energy making our story visible on the timelines.

Agboola Gbenga, our Social Media Director will be sharing methods he deplored and what he calls Social Media Management tools with you in an MBA Class on Whatsapp from February 11-19, 2017. Gbenga assures that “Managing Social Media Marketing of any organisation
can be a herculean task, even with the perfect tools. But with good strategic use of the tools I will be introducing to you, it will actually become a play in the pen”

Men are from mars, women are from Venus? - Ray and Sue Bohlin

No matter how good our goals for the year, determination and discipline if our home - our love live is in disarray then other aspects of our life will be in confusion too.  This write-up is taken from the book: Marriage, Family and sexuality edited by Kerby Anderson. This is part of our Self-Development 2017 Series.

Men are from mars, women are from Venus?
Ray and Sue Bohlin

Sue: Counselor John Gray made a ton of money-and attracted countless grateful fans-in writing his best -selling book Men Are From Mars, Women Are FromVenus.1 This book explored the intrinsic differences between men and women in a way that has helped millions of people understand why relationships between the two sexes can be so frustrating!

Ray: in this chapter we’ll be examining some of the insights from this book, then looking at what the Bible says about how God wants men and women to relate to each other. It’s no surprise that since when God created us to be different, He knew all about those differences thousands of years ago when He gave very specific instructions for each gender!

Sue: The whimsical premise of Men Are from Mars is that many years ago, all men lived on mars, all women lived on Venus. Once they got together, they respected and enjoyed their differences-until one day everybody woke up completely forgetting that they once come from different planets. And ever since, men mistakenly expect women to think and communicate and react the way men do, and women expect men to think and communicate and react the way women do. These unrealistic expectations cause frustration. But when we understand the God given differences between male and female, We have more realistic expectations of the other  be very frustrating for some people when gender differences are painted in such broad strokes, since there’s such a broad spectrum of what women are like and what men are like. Both men and women come in different shapes and sizes, but by and large, we feel that most will identify with these characteristics.

Sue: with that said, let’s look at some differences between men and women.

How Men and women Differ
Ray: Men get a sense of self from achievement, we tend to be task oriented, and being self-reliant is very important to us. You put those two together, and you get people who hate to ask for directions or for help. I’ll wander in a store for fifteen minutes trying to find something on my own, because accomplishing the task of getting a certain item is not going to be satisfying unless I do it myself. For us, asking for help is an admission of failure; we see it as a weakness.

Sue: Women get a sense of self from relationships. Where men are task oriented, we are relationally oriented. Our connections to other people are most important thing to us. Instead of prizing self-reliance, we tend to be interdependent, enjoying the connectedness to other people, especially other women. For us, both asking for help and offering it is a compliment; we’re saying, “let me build a bridge between us. I value you, and it’ll bind us together.”

Ray: Men usually focus on goal. We want to get to the bottom line, to the end of something.
Sue: But women enjoy the process, not that reaching goal is not important, but we like getting there too. That’s why driving vacations are so different for men and women; the guys want to get to their destinations and beat their best time with the fewest stops, and we sort of treasure to talk and look and maybe stop at the outlet malls along the way!
We believe these admittedly broad-brushed differences are rooted in God-created traits. In fact, some Christian authors like Gary smalley and stu weber have addressed them in their book as well.

Ray: Men are competitive. Big shock, huh? Whether we’re on the basketball court or on the highway, we just naturally want to win, to be out front. Many of us are driven to prove ourselves, to prove that we are competent, and it comes out in a competitive spirit.
Sue: And it’s not that girls aren’t competitive, because of course we are; it’s just that we tend to be cooperative than competitive. When girls are playing and one gets hurt, the game will often stop and even be forgotten while everyone gathers around and comforts the one who went down. It’s that relational part of us coming out.

Ray: Men are often more logical and analytical than women.

Sue: And we tend to be more intuitive than men. This isn’t some sort of mystic claim; there was a study at Stanford University that women catch subliminal messages faster and more accurate than men. Voila-intuition.

Ray: This difference is evident in brain activity. Men’s brains tend to show activity in one hemisphere at a time…

Sue: Where women’s brains will show the two hemisphere of communication with each other, back and forth, constantly. That means that often, men and women can arrive at the same conclusion, using completely different means to get there. Our thinking has accused of being convoluted, but it works!

Ray: Men are linear. We can usually focus on just one thing at a time. That’s why Sue’s learned not to try to talk to me while I’m reading the paper. It’s a struggle for me to read and listen at the same time.

Sue: Yes, I’ve learned to get Ray’s attention and ask if I can talk to him so it’ll be an actual conversation and not a monologue! God made us women to be muti-taskers, able to juggle many things at once. It’s a requirement for mothering, I’ve discovered. Many times I’d be cooking dinner and helping the kids’ homework and answering the phone and keeping an ear on the radio, at all the same time.

Ray: Men tend to be compartmentalized, like a chest of drawers: work in one drawer, relationships in another drawer, sports in a third drawer, and so on. All the various parts of our lives can be split off from each other.

Sue: whereas women are more like a ball of yarn where everything connected to everything else. That’s why a woman can’t get romantic when there’s some unresolved anger and frustration with her husband and he doesn’t see what the two things have to do with each other.

Ray: one more thing: men are action oriented. When we feel hostile, our first instinct is to release it physically. And when we’re upset, the way for us to feel better is to actively solve the problem.

Sue: women are verbal. (Another big surprise, huh?). Our hostility is released words rather than fists. And when we’re upset, the way for us to so many feel better is by talking about our problem with other people.

Ray: when men are under stress, we generally distract ourselves with various activities. That’s why you see so many men head for the nearest basketball hoop or bury themselves in the paper or TV. But there’s another aspect of the way we handle severe stress that can be particularly frustrating to women who understand the way we are: a man withdraws into his “cave.” We need to be apart from everybody else while we figure out problems alone. Remember, a man is very self-reliant and competitive, and to ask for help is weakness, so he will first want to solve the problem by himself.

Sue: we women handle stress in the exact opposite way, which of course is going to pose major problems until we understand this difference! When we’re stressed, we get more involved with other people. We want to talk about what’s upsetting us, because we process information and feeling by putting them into words. But merely talking is only half of it; we talk in order to be heard and under-stood. Having good listeners on the other hand is equally important. No wonder there is so much misunderstanding when people are under stress. As a friend of ours put it, “men head for their cave, and women head for the back door!”

Ray: John Gray gave some great advice. He said that when a man’s going into his cave, he can give powerful assurance to the woman in his life by telling her, “I’ll be back.”
Sue: Works for me! What’s next?

Ray: A man’s primary need is for respect. A man needs respect- trust, acceptance, appreciation, admiration, approval, and encouragement-both from his peers and from the significant woman in his life. A man needs to know he is respected. He also needs to be needed. That’s why it’s so devastating when a man loses his job. He gets his sense of self achievements, and he needs to be needed, so when the means to achieve and provide for his family is taken away, it’s emotionally catastrophic.

Sue: it’s good for us women to know that, so we can be grace-givers in a time of awful trauma. I think that just as a man is devastated by the loss of his job, a woman is devastated by the loss of a close relationship; both losses reflect the God-given differences between us. Just as a man needs to be respected, we primarily need to be cherished. Cherishing means giving each other tender care, understanding, respect, devotion, validation, and reassurance. We need to know other’s think we are special. And just as a man needs to be needed, we need to be protected. That’s why security is so important to us. A man needs to be able to provide for.

Ray: one final difference. For men, words are simply for conveying facts and information.
Sue: But women, words mean much more. They are not just to convey information, but to explore and discover our thoughts and feelings, to help us feel better when we’re upset, and it’s the only way we have to create intimacy. To a woman, words are like breathing.

Women’s Needs and Issues
Ray: we have been examining how God created men and women to be different. So it’s not surprising to find how much of our uniqueness and how many of our needs are addressed by God’s command and precepts in the Bible.

Sue: in this section this section we’ll consider women’s needs and issues, and look at how God fit perfectly to the observations we’ve made. In the next section, we’ll look at men’s needs.
As I said, our primary needs as women is to be cherished –to be shown TLC, understanding, respect, devotion, validation, and reassurance.

Ray: And in Ephesians 5:25, we read God’s command that addresses this need: “husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,” when we think about the way Christ loves the church, we see a sacrificial love, a tender love, and a love that is committed to acting in the church’s best interest at our savior’s own expense. God doesn’t just want men to love their wives like they love sports He wants us to love our wives in a way that makes them feel cherished and special. He wants us to love our wives with a sacrificial love that puts her needs and desires above our own.
First peter 3:7 gives further instruction along this line: “your husband’s likewise, live with your wives in an understanding way” (NASB). The Greek literally reads, “Dwell with them according to knowledge.” The only way to live with your wife in an “understanding way” is to seek to know to know her. And a husband listens and responds to what his wife shares- remembering that women are created to be verbal- she will be cherished and understood and loved.
The last part of 1 peter 3:7 continues, “Lives with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, since she is a woman.” This isn’t a slam on women. When we read this verse, with ought to think along the lines of a fine china cup. It’s definitely weaker than a tin cup, but that’s because it’s so fragile, delicate, and far more valuable. When we serve dinner on our china, we’re very careful in handling it, and extremely protective of washing and drying it. We treat our china with tenderness and gentleness because of its fragility and value. That’s how we cherish it. And that’s how man is to treat his wife - not roughly or carelessly, but with tenderness and gentleness, because God made women to be treated with special care.

Sue: The flip side of needing to be cherished is our need for security. We need to be protected and provided for. Even when a wife works, she wants to know that her that her husband is the main provider, or at truly wants to be and is working to that end. The burden of being forced to provide for our families is bigger than we should have to bear.
Ray: God created that need for security within women. That’s why he puts such a high value on the provisional aspect of a man’s character. First Timothy 5:8 says, if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” God wants men to be diligent workers and providers.” He created us to bear the burden of providing; women are to be protected from that burden whenever possible.

Men’s Needs and Issues
Ray: Men’s primary needs are for respect and support - to receive trust, acceptance, appreciation, admiration, approval, and encouragement.

Sue: I think God intends for wives to meet those needs by submitting to their husbands, as they are commanded to do in Ephesians 5:22 1 peter 3:1. Submission doesn’t mean giving in or being overworked or dormant; it’s a gift of our will. It means submission to God first, then demonstrating that submission by choosing to serve and respect our husbands, always being their number one supporter, even when a man is more of a jerk than a superman, he needs the respect of his wife, even if she has to ask the lord for his perspective on what area of his life are worthy of respect!
It’s interesting to me that in Ephesians 5, at the beginning on the passage of marriage, Paul exhorts women to submit to their husbands as the lord , and closes this section by saying, “ And the wife must respect her husband” (v.33), submission and respect aren’t the same thing, but they’re both necessary to meet a man’s god- given needs. In the middle of this, “marriage sandwich” is the awesome command for men to love their wives sacrificially and tenderly, as Christ loves the church. What I see is that offering submission and respect in a natural response to that kind of love.

Ray: Another aspect of men’s constitution is that we’re action oriented, whereas women who are verbal.

Sue: yes, and that’s why I am very intrigued by the wisdom of peter’s admonishment to women, where he says, you wives be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior” (1 peter 3:1-2 NASB). To men, words are cheap-and if they’re coming from a woman, all too plentiful! What impresses a man is what people do, not what they say. So here the holy spirit inspired peter to basically tell us to shut up and live holy lives, which is the only language that’s going to have a true impact on a man.

Ray: Another characteristic of men is that we tend to be self-oriented, as opposed to women who are more relational.

Sue: It’s interesting to me that Paul exhorts men to love their wives as they love themselves and their own bodies (Eph. 5:33). And he does this without condemning them for that self-orientation; he just uses it as a point of reference to demonstrate how powerfully men are to love their wives. From what I’ve observed at the health club about the way some men love their bodies, God wants men to indulge their wives with some major pampering!

Ray: One last comment. While men and women may be constitutionally different by design, we do share one important and serious flaw: our sin nature. Both genders are prideful and selfish. And that is one reason we find commands to both men and women to serve the other sex. But in the midst of our service, we can certainly enjoy the differences God gave us!
