DESIGNING TRICKS OF THE TRADE
You don’t have to be a professional to appreciate interior design. And you certainly don’t have to be one in order to bring life to the home of your dreams. Understand and apply a few key tricks and tips about what trends to avoid and you will be well on your way to being the master of your own home and style.

Bring your furniture away from the walls:
That open space in the middle of the room. Yes, it is awkward and creates a rigid atmosphere that makes guests feel unwelcomed. You want an inviting space with a room that seems full of life and energy. Don’t be afraid of people seeing the back of the couch, and arrange your furniture in different positions to maintain the intimacy without too much formality.

Matching is not a requirement:
Although magazines can “wow!” readers with a perfectly furnished room where everything is prim and proper, that is not what the average person’s home looks like. Matching colors and patterns can look fluid and aesthetically pleasant, but you may suffer from a two-dimensional feel. Rooms benefit from extra textures and a myriad of colors that draw the eye to different parts of the room, while still tying everything together. A flush of beige and gray may look uniform and even, but without depth and diversity, the room doesn’t have that “lived-in feel”.

Proper lighting is a must:

Your furniture arrangement could be perfect with everything in its proper place, but if you succumb to poor lighting, the room will be ruined. Many aspiring designers can overlook this feature and completely take away the value of their hard work. One overwhelming light source doesn’t offer the layering that creates a more natural look. Functionality is key and the proper lighting can make the room appear larger. Something as simple as having dimmers will ensure the room can be adapted to the time of day.
