Amasa firdausi, Nigerian law school and the wearing of hijab

By: Honourable Sadiq Ibrahim Dasin

I waited until today to give my opinion on the dust raised by the refusal of the Nigerian Law School to allow Miss Amasa Firdausi attend her Call Bar because she wore Hijab to the ceremony. I was waiting for resumption of the House today to talk about it which I did when the Speaker the Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara graciously allowed debate on the matter following a motion by Hon. Some of my friends have said that we moved too quickly within the same week from Hijab-Gate (religion) to Innoson-Gate (ethnicity). I told my worried friends that I do not share their despondency.

On the contrary, I am saying Allah be praised for I have learned to give thanks and praise to God for little mercies concerning Nigeria. At least two days separate our cursing and hating each other on account of religion from our cursing and hating each other on account of ethnicity this week.

Special Focus: SARS is created to hit robbers

Special Focus: SARS is created to hit robbers

By: Ola Pat

Nigeria Police Complain Channels
About 2 weeks ago, the social media was aflame with the outcry of injustices against the operative Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS. The cry for justices started from the social media and like a wide fire spread to other media as more victims recounted their ordeal in the hands of the operatives at different times and places. Though, the Police authority later grudgingly takes some steps to appease those calling for the heads of SARS by fishing out about 31 members as sacrificial lambs, the police initial reaction through the Police Public Relation office was to try to blackmail those calling for the end #endsars of the outfit tagging them robbers. But instead more people including celebrities add more by sharing their experience too. With the online campaign and street protests in some cities in Nigeria, it was obvious that the Police Tactical Squad called SARS has been corrupt absolutely by the absolute powers it corned from the failure of the Police to curb crime.

The result of these outcries and description of the exploitation of the public by SARS has yielded a partial victory as the police authority has provided communication channels to report the atrocity committed by the squad members. Though, time has blurred out the purpose and origin of the Squad. Commune Magazine takes you on a memory lane. SARS was conceived as a police tactical squad trained to combat Armed Robbers at lease that was the initial concept of setting up the squad in Lagos, until recently that the squad start hunting for fraudsters, 419ers and anything and everything that will surrender illegitimate cash to the squad team members.

SARS was created by Mr. Mike Okiro in 1991 in response to the incessant robbery and constant assault on policemen at roadblocks in and around Lagos. As at that time, there is a notorious armed robber that scares the daylight out of every police officer in Lagos by the name of Shina Rambo. His modus operandi was to snatch exotic cars and according to reports move them in a long convey into Benin republic. But the most daring part of this daredevil operation is a shoot at sight of anything in police uniform. Thus, the situation at that is to develop a strategy that will not only conceal the police response team but that can also guaranty an element of surprise.   This is the genesis of SARS.

According to Mr. Okiro in a recent interview in Daily Trust “The idea was that they would be in mufti, and armed, simply for the very important element of surprise. They would take cover, and communicating with walkie-talkies, hit the armed robbers. They did that two or three times, and the robbery attacks went down, drastically, and at a point stopped altogether." The effective containment of the activities of armed robbers then prompted other police divisions across the country to fashion out a similar squad with the same name leading to the gradual erosion of the goals and purpose of the squad.

The success of the squad operation relies heavily on blending in with the populace by being in or wearing mufti in other to invade detection by the robbers until it is too late to react appropriately. As earlier pointed out, the nightmare of the car owners, Shina Rambo abhorred the sight of police uniform, so by wearing mufti SARS unit are able to jump on him and his gang before they are noticed. In the said interview Mr. Okiro insisted that SARS duty as constitute “is not to investigate, but to hit, it’s a Special Anti-Robbery Squad, not an investigative one”.

Artificial Intelligence, summoning the demons

Artificial Intelligence, summoning the demons

Ola Pat Robotic
On Wednesday, 29th of November, 2017, the Facebook team did the unthinkable by putting into operation an Artificial Intelligence, A to patrol Facebook walls in search of anyone that is “expressing thoughts about suicide on Facebook” so that such person can receive necessary support before he/she commit suicidal. That was supposed to be a bright idea and a blessing for humanity. However, the fear of AI is the beginning of wisdom because a lot can go wrong with this technology. The most important being the extinction of humanity or enslavement of humanity by robots with intelligent. AI also known as machine intelligence in computer science according to Wikipedia is any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goals. In other words, AIs cannot only mimic humans and their way of life, they can also learn by interaction. Humans have been known to be a threat to even the eco-system that sustain his existence, consequently if your AI car perceives that you are a threat to its existence or you are trying to pull the plug on your AI device. God forbids your AI device feel threaten, then you will understand this part of the definition “takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goals” in this case its survival. The CEO of Tesla, makers of AI cars, Elon Musk refers to the use of this technology, AI as summoning the demon. A demon, he believed we might not be able to control.

Tips For Building Child's Confidence.

Tips For Building Child's Confidence.

A psychologist says parents should do these 17 things to raise a more confident child. Confidence is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child. Carl Pickhardt, a psychologist and author of 15 parenting books, says a kid who lacks confidence will be reluctant to try new or challenging things because they are scared of failing or disappointing others. This can end up holding them back later in life and prevent them from having a successful career. "The enemies of confidence are discouragement and fear," he says. So, as a parent, it is your job to encourage and support your child as they attempt to tackle difficult tasks. Here are 17 tips for raising a confident child:

Appreciate effort no matter if they win or lose
When you are growing up, the journey is more important than the destination. So whether your child makes the winning goal for his team or accidentally kicks it out of bounds, applaud their effort, Pickhardt says. They should never feel embarrassed for trying. "Over the long haul, consistently trying hard builds more confidence than intermittently doing well," he explains.

Encourage practice to build competence
Encourage your child to practice whatever it is they are interested in but do so without putting too much pressure on them. Harmony Shu, a piano prodigy, told Ellen DeGeneres that she started practicing when she was just 3 years old. "Practice invests effort in the confident expectation that improvement will follow," Pickhardt explains.

Let them figure out problems by themselves
If you do the hard work for your child then he/she will never develop the abilities or the confidence to figure out problems on his/her own. "Parental help can prevent confidence derived from self-help and figuring out on the child's own," Pickhardt explains. In other words, better that your child gets a few B's and C's rather than straight A's, so long as they are actually learning how to solve the problems and do the work.

Let them act their age.
Don't expect your child to act like an adult. "When a child feels that only performing as well as parents are good enough, that unrealistic standard may discourage effort," he says. "Striving to meet advanced age expectations can reduce confidence."

Encourage curiosity
Sometimes a child's endless stream of questions can be tiresome, but it should be encouraged. Paul Harris of Harvard University told The Guardian that asking questions is a helpful exercise for a child's development because it means they realize that "there are things they don't know ... that there are invisible worlds of knowledge they have never visited." When children start school, those from households that encouraged curious questions have an edge over the rest of their classmates because they have had practice taking in information from their parents, The Guardian reported, and that translates to taking in information from their teacher. In other words, they know how to learn better and faster.

Give them new challenges
Show your child that they can make and accomplish small goals to reach a big accomplishment like riding a bike without training wheels. "Parents can nurture confidence by increasing responsibilities that must be met," Pickhardt explains.

Avoid creating shortcuts or making exceptions for your child
Special treatment can breed a lack of confidence, Pickhardt says. "Entitlement is no substitute for confidence."

Never criticize their performance
Nothing will discourage your child more than criticizing his or her efforts. Giving useful feedback and making suggestions is fine -- but never tell them they are doing a bad job. If your kid is scared to fail because they worry you will be angry or disappointed, they'll never try new things. "More often than not, parental criticism reduces the child's self-valuing and motivation," says Pickhardt.

Treat mistakes as building blocks for learning.
"Learning from mistakes builds confidence," he says. But this only happens when you, as a parent, treat mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow. Don't be over-protective of your child. Allow them to mess up every now and then, and help them understand how they can better approach the task next time. Pickhardt says parents should see "uh-oh" moments as an opportunity to teach their kids not to fear failure.

Open the door to new experiences.
Pickhardt says you, as a parent, have a responsibility to "increase life exposures and experiences so the child can develop confidence in coping with a larger world." Exposing children to new things teaches them that no matter how scary and different something seems, they can conquer it.

Teach them what you know how to do.
You are your child's hero -- at least until they are a teenager. Use that power to teach them what you know about how to think, act, and speak. Set a good example, and be a role model. Pickhardt says watching you succeed will help your child be more confident that they can do the same.

Don't tell them when you're worried about them
Parental worry can often be interpreted by the child as a vote of no confidence, he says. "Expressing parental confidence engenders the child's confidence."

Praise them when they deal with adversity.
Life is not fair. It is hard, and every child will have to learn that at some point. When they do encounter hardships, Pickhardt says parents should point out how enduring these challenges will increase their resilience. It is important to remind your child that every road to success is filled with setbacks, he adds.

Offer your help and support, but not too much of it
Giving too much assistance too soon can reduce the child's ability for self-help, says Pickhardt. "Making parental help contingent on the child's self-help first can build confidence."

Applaud their courage to try something new
Whether it is trying out for the travel basketball team or going on their first roller coaster, Pickhardt says parents should praise their kids for trying new things. He suggests saying something as simple as, "You are brave to try this!" "Comfort comes from sticking to the familiar; courage is required to dare the new and different," he says.

Celebrate the excitement of learning
Kids look to their parents for how they should react to things. So, if you get excited about them learning how to swim, or speaking a new language, then they will be excited about those things too. "Learning is hard work and, when accomplished, creates confidence to learn more, so celebrate this willingness to grow," Pickhardt advises.

Be authoritative, but not too forceful or strict

When parents are too strict or demanding, the child's confidence to self-direct can be reduced. "Dependence on being told can keep the child from acting bold," he says.

I understand there is a tremendous opportunity in the app industry. What is the future of the app industry in Nigeria?
The future of App industry in Nigeria is just like the sky, with no limits. The IT revolution is moving gradually away from the web to the mobile and smartphones, and this revolution is driven by Apps, especially the social media Apps.

Going into App happen to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. It has been great, educative, informing, entertaining, and above all, rewarding.

They can have any type of apps. When it comes to building Apps, the first thing to consider should be: Who owns the App? Who is the App made for? Is there any limit to the type of apps business can develop?
There are no limits at all. In as much as the business is in existence, new ideas and innovations will always come up, this gives way to the business or individual to either upgrade an existing App, or develop a new one to serve a purpose.

It is generally believed that app development is quite expensive, is that true?
I think it all depends on how complex the app is, and also depends on the bargaining power of the party involved. But, I know it is quite cheaper to make an App in Nigeria, than what is obtainable in other developed countries. And since more and more Nigerians are building Apps as the days goes by, it, therefore, means the price is within reach.

How expensive is App Wheel app development?
We are not expensive, besides Apps Wheel was created to support inspiring developers to get involved, as well as give that window for small and medium business, organization and individuals to upgrade and be part of the mobile revolution. What is the process of developing an app?
As soon as we receive client's briefing, we start from planning to data collation, and then we move into execution, then testing and amendment (if any) before delivery.

What type of support do you offer the business that you develop an app for, after deployment service?
We offer after sales services, like managing the App for those that may need such support. We also train our customers on how to manage their App. We are always available for every upgrade request with 24/7 phone support.

When can a business develop an app?
At any time the business seeks to break new grounds, and also when the business is on the quest for customer base expansion.

The importance of mobile App to a business is endless. These few can quickly be mentioned; Easy and quick service delivery, Publicity and customer base expansion, Fast and easy passage of information on new products or services to customers with just a single click, without having to pay for advertisement, Easy access into the global business circles and a lots more.

How to unfriend a friend on Facebook

How to unfriend a friend on Facebook

By: Ola Pat

Often there are situations that require that one remove a particular friend from one’s circle of friends on facebook, just as you can disassociate them in real life. A friend is someone that has been given access to one’s information, timeline and can see whatever you or another friend write on your timeline or wall on facebook just by accepting his/her friendship request or anybody that accept your friendship request.  Also, you can monitor the activity of anybody on facebook by following them that means you don’t have to be their friend to be able to monitor the activities on their timeline or wall. One of the differences between a friend and a person being followed is that you will not be able to message the person. For the followed person to access the inbox message, he/she will require a little technical knowledge (this I will deal with sometime in the near future). There are other difference too but this is not the focus of this HOW TO TECHY. Here is how to de-friend a facebook friend.

1    Locate the person you want to unfriend.

2.      Get to the person’s wall or timeline by click his/her name.

3.      On the person's wall click About.

4.      This takes you to the person’s Profile page

5.      Scroll down and click on Unfriend or Unfollow.

6.      You will be asked to confirm that you want to remove the person from your list of friends.

7.      Click Confirm to remove or cancel to retain the friendship.

8.      You will then receive a message confirming the remover of the person.

Adila couture introduces easy to wear hijabs

Adila couture introduces easy to wear hijabs

By: Habibat Yussuf

As more Muslim sisters get attracted to wearing hijabs in fulfillment of Allah's command to keep their chastity, some of the hindrances have often been: the time needed to get a perfect nice wrap around, the knowledge curve needed to wrap it around appropriately, pinning it fashionable and most importantly pinning it without a scratching the face and without discomfort.

The traditional way of wearing the hijabs not only affect the lifespan of the hijabs, the pin holding it together often mark the face and cause discomfort. But all that may be in the past as Adila Couture, an innovative fashion House have created ready-to-wear Hijabs for the 21st-century Muslim sisters and mothers that requires no pin, wrap around knowledge curve and more importantly no facial discomfort and scratches. In our 2017, 3rd quarter series: Business Services, Adila Couture`s dynamic Creative Director, Mrs. Ayilara gives a background to their innovativeness in headgears.  Enjoy reading.

What is the latest in headgear?
As you know the headgear is just an aspect of our fashion business. Our service catered for both male and female corporate and casual wears need. We are even more particular about Muslim females wear, because of the Special requirements of their dressing.  Our latest innovation project is the Fashionable hijabs. It is a ready-to-wear Hijab without the hassle of putting pins here and there and perhaps damaging the hijab by putting holes in it, it's just a "slip on" that is simple and fashionable at the same time. We solve the problem of wearing and at the same time address the fashion side of it.

Who is it for?
It is for every Muslim woman, who wants to obey Allah and the prophet. Our product makes it easy for them to obey. It can be used alone or as "adds on. It can be worn on a bigger hijab. It is made so simple that it can be worn by anyone to the office or any outing, easy to wear and easier to pull off.

What is different between this and the traditional one?
The difference is much, the traditional hijab required time to put on even when you are adept at wearing it while this one is something you slip into nicely. It means while you are in a hurry, you can slip into it still searching your bag for your car keys. This design increase the lifespan of the hijabs, if you are like most hijab sisters you start losing interest in your favourite hijabs because the pins you use have created too many pinholes. This design eliminates the use of pins and the discomfort that comes with it. Those ones are the usual rectangular hijab that needs a pin to hold it in place that is mainly just the difference between the 2 hijabs, one is hassle-free, pin free, just slip on while the other is the opposite.

How do you come about this innovation?
Well, I just love hijabs with more volumes in the front, it covers the back and the fronts with its fullness, this can hardly be achieved with the usual slip-on hijabs available in the market, so I came up with this one after I had put pins in everywhere possible just to get the desired volume. And as a designer, I decided to design one the way I want it to look on me. As usual, sisters start ordering for their "copies”, because they know we innovate.
Again the desire to make hijabs easy to wear for new hijabis or hijabites as you wish, practical working women, university students, moms, doctors, and nurses without going through the struggle of styling their hijab and using pins prompted this innovation.

And how is the response from your clients?
So far, the response is really encouraging. Remember, it was the demand that led to the commercialization of my personal hijab design. It seems that there are people just like me that are tired of using pins every time and spending their precious time to achieve a fashionable style. They just want to wear their desired kind of hijab design. There is more demand for more designs which we are working on right now. Presently, we have two designs. These designs are so versatile that it blends well with any outfit, it comes in various colors made with velvet and sometimes combined with nets, we have it in one hand, 2 hands, with or without a cap. We can also design to specifications. So, you no longer have bad hijab days! …No more pins on the bed, on the chair or anywhere!

Lastly, let's talk about your headgears, the Turbans?
We call them head wraps, also popularly known as turbans. They are a form of caps that used to be mainly for our mothers then especially Muslim women until fashion focuses attention on them. Now new fashionable turban has emerged, with embellishment made of stones and pearls, it's no longer a home headgear. It has since become a part of modern women fashion and an outing accessory that can be worn to any event and on anything, native, casual even on corporate wears.
How can one order for any of these headgears?
We are a modern fashion house, so people can order by phone, Whatsapp and on our social media handles and we deliver everywhere within Nigeria. Our terms and condition, a token for delivery. Our Free Delivery independent promo is still on until the end of October 2017 for those living on Lagos Island.
