The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday, 27 November 2017 the upgrade of facebook Artificial Intelligent, AI to identify suicidal hints and notes on walls and timeline. This, he said will enable Facebook to get the personal support and attention. This follows the outbreak of suicide of young people around the world including Nigeria. One of the common factors among this rising case of suicide is the suicide note or hints are often left on Facebook walls.

According to the message on Mark’s wall, a team has been set up around the world to work 24/7 to get help for people suspected to be suicidal. The AL tool is also expected to “understand subtle nuances of language” and identify different other issues such as bullying and the speech. Mark reported that Facebook will be working with others such as save.org, National Suicide prevention. He concluded by with that “If we can use AI to help people to be there for their family and friends that are an important and positive step forward”.

Despite the many lives AI technology can save, people have raised an objection to the use of AI. John Macpherson, a Facebook user reminded Mark the harm AI can cause to the entire human race by referring to the case of the shot down AIs. Sometime early this year, a study group activated 2 AIs but a little while later the AIs were communicating in a language the study could not decipher. The study group was forced to shut down the AIs.
