The growth of illegal waste disposal carried on by the activities of
the cart pushers is become a source of concern to the community. It is
surprising that almost ten years after the state government banned
refuse disposal by using cart pushers, some members of Bariga
community still uses their services leading to phenomenal growth.
Our investigation revealed that the business is dominated by Hausas,
who can barely communicate in any other language apart from Hausa as
they could not understand question asked by our reporter. We also
found that people around Igbo-Igunnu area to Bariga Oja, Odunsi,
Ilaje and community area are the major customers of the cart pushers.
Also involved are residents around St. Dennis Church area.
Our reporter spoke with some residents. They blamed the PSP for
inconsistent pick up for their acts. We trailed the cart pushers to
their disposal site at Ajayi Olaiya street, where it was observed that
they were tolled before being allowed to disposal off the refuse into
the lagoon.
